Truancy
Strict guidelines must be followed or else the absence is considered unexcused or truant. Students are required by state law to attend school until the age of 18. Students who do not report to their assigned placement will be subject
to disciplinary action. Parents may be called when a student is reported truant from class. Habitual absences and
truancy will require a conference with parents and administration. If the problem is not rectified, the guardian and
the student will be referred to Juvenile Court in Racine County as mandated by State Statute 118.16.
According to the Department of Public Instruction, a habitual truant is a student who is absent from school without
an acceptable excuse (s.118.16 (4) and s.118.15) part or all of 5 or more days on which school is held during a
school semester. (See s.118.15, Wis. Stats.)
Truancy defined:
1. Leave the school or school grounds without signing out in the attendance office. It should be noted that opening
an outside door during the school day without permission would be interpreted as a breach of security.
2. Are absent from school without prior permission from parents.
3. Are absent from class without permission.
4. Come to school but do not attend the correct classes.
In this case, students will be referred to law enforcement. Students are issued detentions for classes missed. Leaving the building without permission is issued additional detention time. When a student is issued a detention he/she is required to serve that detention(s) on the next available day that detentions are held.
